(1)  What’s going on at Bob’s Jobs – Meetup groups

If you are not familiar with it, Meetup is an online social networking portal that facilitates offline group meetings (live, in person!) in various localities around the world.  It allows members to find and join groups unified by common interests, ranging anywhere from politics to hobbies.  Upon entering a zip code, city or topic, the website helps to arrange places and times for like-minded people to meet.

Jo belongs to a couple of Meetup groups that are devoted to networking and sharing helpful information with other small business owners or entrepreneurs.   They generally meet once a month and often feature a speaker on a topic intended to provide insight or education for group members.  Refreshments or a meal are often part of the meeting, depending on the time and location.  Because they are often free or at a low cost to members, Meetups are a budget-conscious way for Jo to network with other local companies and discuss services as well as marketing ideas.

One of the groups, the Norfolk WIRE (Women in Real Estate) is well attended and well-established.  While most of the members are female real estate agents, the group also consists of service providers who partner well with real estate firms, including marketing and media services, insurance brokers and of course, handyman services!  The group meets monthly at Uno’s Chicago Grill off Military Highway in Norfolk.

Interested in joining one of these groups?  Let Jo know (757.318.0404) and she will be glad to take you as her guest!

(2) Personal adventures of Jo & Bob – let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

With 8 inches of snow on the ground following our most recent snowstorm, Bob and Jo got to work shoveling the pretty white stuff out of the way in order to get to tools in the workshop and continue business as usual!

Just like everybody else, Jo & Bob took some time to enjoy the beautiful winter scenery and take pictures of this rarely seen landscape:

(3) A recent example of Bob’s Jobs work – a custom deck project

As the former owner of a deck design and installation business, Bob has much experience with this kind of work. The up and down temperatures here in Tidewater, however, can create a bit of a challenge for those who work outside during the winter months.  With considerable snowfall on the ground, Bob and Jo recently suited up in long johns, hats, gloves and boots to take upon the task of installing a deck for Jo’s dad.  Just like the mailman who delivers the mail regardless of the weather (remember the unofficial postal service motto, “neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these courageous couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds”?), we showed up for work as planned!

Because Dad is 90 years old and has some balance issues, Bob has drawn up plans for a custom deck to meet his needs.  A handrail is a must, so that he can safely step off of the platform deck down into his sloping yard without falling.  In the past, Bob has installed custom made ramps for handicapped individuals, so he is aware of the importance of these types of details.

Aside from the cold weather and steep slope of the yard, the surrounding landscaping also proves to be a challenge.  The roots of two large trees have to be incorporated into the deck design and Dad wants some benches too.  Bob is constantly checking the leveling of the deck boards and has to take multiple measurements to ensure their proper installation.
